ONtrend:
Fall 2010

Part 1 of 3

Lengthy Layers

For the first time in a long time hemlines were longer & hit at a fairly flattering point below the knee.  To call this trend a "Big Love" cast member's dream is an understatement, but it is also a dream for fashion forward women everywhere.  Designers from all aesthetics were proving this look is for all types of women & a fresh new look for fall.  These lengthy silhouettes looked superb when paired with other lengthy layers of cable knit sweaters, shirtings, & boyfriend blazers.  As always- what was once old is new again… The first few times I saw this look all I could picture was a body conscious Elaine Benes from the 90’s comedy "Seinfeld", but with every show the look appeared revitalized & brand new.  With this image in mind I tried this trend for myself on a cold snowy winter’s day- Day #7 of NYFW to be exact.  Donning an ankle length dress with a hip length cashmere button down, topped off with an oversized grandma cable knit sweater & cinched at the waist with a skinny belt one would have thought I recreated the wheel with how many compliments were bestowed upon the outfit.  This style is easy, comfortable & - pending that you didn’t get rid of all your 90’s attire - can most likely be found in all our closets already.

Crimson Cool-

Roll Tide Roll… For all you none college football fans out there this may not have made sense so here is a quick lesson; college football National Champions this year were the Alabama Crimson Tide & it appears the Crimson Tide is also the champion of the Fall 2010 runways.  This is the perfect shade of red & show after show this was without a doubt the season’s IT color.  No need to bust out the beer kegs or feel the need to tailgate anytime soon Crimson can be worn by anyone ; from cool & casual during the day to sexy & seductive in the evening, Crimson was everywhere.

Shoulder Seduction-

What has been the trend for a few seasons now & is showing no sign of slowing down is that of the exaggerated shoulder.  Yes this trend made popular in the 80’s & brought back to the masses through fashion’s Avant-garde dressers like Rihanna & Lady Gaga the big shoulder was on almost every catwalk in one capacity or another.  Shoulders were pointy, scalloped, & floral- you name it, it was most likely there.  They donned dresses, blouses, blazers & were paired down with slimming silhouettes on the bottom.  I myself am a huge fan of this look, but have to beg the question- How long before we look back at our photos from this fashion era and ask “What were we thinking” as many did of the 80’s shoulder pad wearing era.  But for now, I will wear my pumped up shoulders proud without any hint of humiliation & remember to store everything for the next go round!
