50 Shoes That Changed the World

50 shoes that changed the world coverIn my life, I've experienced a few of thosemoments in fashion that changed the way I view things going forward due to the monumental, seismic way the aesthetic norm is forever altered as a result of these moments very existence - Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam singing "Alive" on Saturday Night Live, Princess Diana's wedding gown, Juan Carlos Obando's Fall 2009 collection show & Raf Simons Fall 2009 collection for Jil Sander are the 4 that immediately pop into my mind. I'm sure there are more, that are temporarily eluding me.

Putting an end to such mental blocks for good, the British Design Museum has released the first two of a 4 volume sets under the catchy monicker of "50 _________ that Changed the World". The first two volumes, "50 Dresses" & "50 Shoes", dealing with such pivotal moments as Wallace Simpson's wedding dress or (my personal fave in the volume) Yves St. Laurent's iconic Piet Mondrian shift in the case of the first volume & Antonio Berardi's much heralded "Heelless Boots" circa 2,000 to the never heralded common "flip flop" of drug store metal bin fame in the case of the latter.

These books are easy reads & at only $20.00 US per title, they are without a doubt going to become the holiday favors of serious fashioninstas everywhere. The next two volumes, "50 Cars" & "50 Chairs", obviously meant to appeal to the more masculine half of the population, are due out in the Fall of 2010. I've got my order in already.
